I was recently invited to participate in a live Google HOA (hang out on air) session entitled “Monetizing for Bloggers” and hosted by Katie Kimball of Kitchen Stewardship. Other guests were Stephanie Langford of Keeper of the Home and Ultimate Bundles and Jenn Campus of Foodie Blog Roll and Left Over Queen.
Geez, seeing yourself on video for the first time can be a little scary…can you say “umm”?? I can! Gotta work on that. 🙂 But despite my novice interview skills, we answered some really important questions so I’m excited to share the video with you below. If you don’t have an hour to watch (or listen) start to finish, take a look at the show notes below and fast forward to the section(s) you want to check out.
I didn’t map out the entire session for each speaker, but here are the times you can jump to if you wish to hear my thought on these topics:
10:21 What were your earliest forms of monetization?
16:16 Minimum traffic/posts/etc. before monetizing (+ sneak peak at my future income calculator!)
18:45 Risks of monetizing too early
23:29 Recommended ad networks
24:53 What is the best way to learn DFP (Google Double Click for Publishers – a free ad server), and how to create competition between the networks?
32:29 How much traffic is required to work with Federated Media (one of the premium ad networks we use on 100 Days of Real Food)?
38:33 Top revenue categories
51:30 How have you been able to raise your rates with private advertisers?
57:33 Small things you can do in less than an hour to monetize
I Need to Hear from YOU
I’d love to hear your feedback about the video in the comments. Is this kind of conversation helpful? What changes would provide more value?
But in addition, I’m actually considering setting up a special voicemail line for readers and answering your questions on the blog via short recorded video snippets. Is that something you guys would find helpful? Or would you prefer it be audio only as a podcast (answering questions that is…not a full on interview show)? Or something else I haven’t thought of? Your feedback is important so thanks in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts.
